Focusing on sustainability, small changes in product size and weight can lead to lower carbon emissions. We created Compact by Design to identify products that, while they may not always look very different, have a more efficient design. By removing excess air and water, these products require less packaging and become more efficient to ship. At scale, these minor differences in product size and weight can result in significant reductions in carbon emissions.

There are numerous ways in which products can qualify for the Compact by Design program. For instance, a reduction in the size or weight of a product's packaging can make it more efficient to transport, thus lowering the associated carbon footprint. Similarly, eliminating unnecessary components or materials from the product itself can decrease its overall size and weight, again leading to more efficient shipping and distribution.

Another approach is to concentrate the active ingredients or contents of a product, thereby reducing the amount of water, air, or other filler materials required. This condensed formulation not only decreases the product's physical dimensions but also reduces the resources needed for packaging and transportation.

In addition, certain product designs can be optimized to nest or stack more efficiently, allowing more units to be transported in a single shipment. This space-saving strategy minimizes the number of trips required to move the same quantity of goods, consequently lowering the carbon emissions generated from the logistics operations.

The Compact by Design initiative focuses on identifying these types of smart, subtle design improvements that may not be immediately visible to the consumer but have a meaningful impact on environmental sustainability. By recognizing and promoting these innovative products, we aim to encourage more businesses to adopt similar efficiency-enhancing practices, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future.
